Dr. Sandra Twardosz
Professor
I came to the University of Tennessee in 1974 after earning a Ph.D. in Developmental and Child Psychology at the University of Kansas. Since then, I have been engaged in applied research and the application of research findings to community settings.
My research and scholarship have addressed three broad topic areas: 1) the effects of the organization of the physical and social environment on children's engagement and learning in educational/caregiving settings; 2) the expression of affection in early education settings with application to the socio-emotional development of typically developing children and children with disabilities; and 3) early literacy development with a focus on organizing the physical and social aspects of children's environments to promote interest in and participation with books. I am currently extending this research to aspects of family literacy. In addition, I will be taking professional leave during the fall of 2004 in order to acquire knowledge about the biological basis of behavior that is most related to my research and teaching.
